Why did coach Jeong Jae-hoon and Dong-geol Lee, who had no ties to the Tiger

“I will prepare in a new atmosphere.”

The KIA Tigers, who were eliminated in the semifinals, made changes to the first-team pitching coaching staff. The contracts of main coach Seo Jae-eung (46) and bullpen coach Kwak Jeong-cheol (37) were not renewed. Instead, Doosan Bears coach Jeong Jae-hoon (43) and Hanwha Eagles coach Dong-geol Lee (40) were recruited.

Coach Jeong Jae-hoon has been an experienced player and leader at Doosan for 20 years, excluding his one-year playing career at Lotte. In particular, he played as Doosan's closing pitcher and recorded 139 saves.

When coach Lee Seung-yeop took office, he started as the first team's main coach. However, due to a decline in performance, he was moved down to the second team midway through the season to freshen up the atmosphere. This time, at the request of KIA, I became the leader of another team for the first time.

Coach Lee Dong-geol played at Samsung and Hanwha, worked at Hanwha Power Analysis Institute, and has worked as a bullpen coach since 2021. Unlike coaches Seo Jae-eung and Kwak Jeong-cheol, who were Tigers men, coaches Jeong Jae-hoon and Dong-geol Lee had no ties to KIA.

Regarding the reason for recruiting the two pitching coaches, general manager Shim Jae-hak said, "They are well aware of the latest baseball trends and study hard. If there is a seminar with foreign coaches, they always attend. They have a strong will to learn and the content they present is good. They are also good at using data. Discuss with the manager. He explained the reason, saying, “I was hired after going through this process.”

Coach Kim Jong-guk said, "I had a relationship with Coach Jeong during the national team (2006 WBC) when I was a player. With the change in coaching staff, the pitchers will prepare for next year in a new atmosphere. I expect Coach Dong-geol Lee to lead the young pitchers well as well." said.

Departing coach Seo Jae-eung won 28 games in the major league and served as the main pitcher for KIA. After retiring in 2015, he served as a broadcast commentator and returned as a KIA coach in 2018. He served as bullpen coach, main coach, and remaining military coach. During this season, he returned to the first team's main coach and led the pitchers.

Coach Kwak attracted attention with his fastball during his active career and played a leading role in the 2009 championship. Since then, he has not been able to play much due to injury issues. He retired at the end of the 2018 season and began his leadership career as a second-team pitching coach, and has led the pitchers as a bullpen coach since 2021. He was sincere and principled, and served as a reliable eldest brother to the pitchers.
