Coach Oh Hae-jong of Chung-Ang University, who overcame the ‘away final’,

Coach Oh Hae-jong of Chung-Ang University spoke about the secret to overcoming the disadvantages of the away game.

Chung-Ang University met Soongsil University in the final of the 2023 University Soccer U-League King of Kings held at the Soongsil University stadium on the 23rd and won 1-0. Following 2019, he completed his second career college soccer U-League King of Kings title victory in four years.

After the game, Coach Oh Hae-jong said, “The team has become stronger since winning the Baekdudaegangi Autumn University Football League Championship last August. “At that time, we won against Incheon National University in a penalty shoot-out in the semifinals of the competition, and I think the team gained confidence as we got over the hurdle.”

The final was held at the home of Soongsil University. According to the Korea Football Association competition regulations, the final venue of the King of Kings is to be held at the home stadium of the team held on campus (excluding the 3rd stadium) and which has a large cumulative number of home spectators in the regional league. The association made the final decision considering stadium facilities, spectator safety, and broadcasting environment.

It was burdensome for Chung-Ang University. In fact, one-sided cheering from Soongsil University students and officials could be heard in the stadium. When the decision was made in favor of Chung-Ang University, there were violent protests from the audience. Although it was a psychologically unsettling situation, the Chung-Ang University players played the game calmly.

Coach Oh Hae-jong said, “I taught the players a lot about how to play on the road. He said that rather than rushing to win when you don't know as much about the stadium conditions as your opponent, you should be patient until you get used to the stadium. So there was a difficult time in the first half,” he explained.

He continued, “We were faithful to our defense and aimed for when the opponent would come out. “Rather than focusing on our strengths, we tried to stop the opponent from doing well,” he added.

Lastly, “When we won the last fall collegiate soccer league game, we said it was just the beginning. “I am so happy that the players kept what I said until they won the King of Kings Championship,” he said.
