TEX, 50H-52SV recruits Yates, former ‘save king’
The Texas Rangers, who won their first World Series (WS) trophy, welcomed veteran bullpen resource Kirby Yates.
John Heyman of the New York Post reported on the 6th (Korean time) that the Texas Rangers signed a contract with Kirby Yates. According to Heyman, Yates' contract is for one year and an annual salary of $4.5 million (about 5.9 billion won).
Yates entered the professional world after being selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 798th overall pick in the 26th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft. Yates, who entered the big league stage with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014, did not take on a 'heavy role' in the bullpen until his third year of debut. However, he began to emerge as a 'sure-win team' when he moved from the LA Angels to the San Diego Padres in 2017.
Yates appeared in one game for the Angels in the 2017 season and then wore a San Diego uniform through a trade. In 61 games that year, he began to stand out by going 4 wins, 5 losses, 20 holds, 1 save, and an ERA of 3.72. And the following year, he reached his peak with 63 innings in 65 games, 5 wins, 3 losses, 16 holds, 12 saves, and an ERA of 2.14.
Yates changed his position from 'set-up man' to finisher in the 2019 season, and this choice was correct. Yates took the mound in 60 games and suffered 5 losses, but earned a whopping 41 saves and an ERA of 1.19, earning him the National League save title. Then something unexpected happened. During the 2020 season, he underwent Tommy John surgery due to a ruptured elbow ligament.
Yates missed the entire 2021 season due to major surgery, and returned to the big leagues with the Atlanta Braves in 2022, but his performance in 9 games was only 2 holds and an ERA of 5.14. However, he qualified as a free agent after appearing in 61 games this year, playing 60⅓ innings, showing excellent performance with 7 wins, 2 losses, 0 holds, 5 saves, and an ERA of 3.28.
